From the late 1990s Stephen Shakespeare worked in Production Planning for a number of years.

Starting with a planning department with 4 staff, controlling a factory of 100 men the planning department was very clerical using lots of paper. It took a week to fully plan and track work orders around a factory. Over about 5 years the work was moved over to software until the department was ran on a half person and was wholly reviewed daily.

That's 8 x 5 = 40x faster

Much of this software is now legacy, and would have to be re-written. But the understanding is there so with a little work this could be rebuilt to assist new Production Planning departments.
